I'm always on the lookout for why people think McCain would be a good president. the only argument that people seem to be giving is that he was a POW and stuck up for his fellow prisoners. that's great. really. I suppose the only other qualification is that he is a Republican.

but everything I have seen him do has pointed to the complete absurd, almost out of a bad end-of-the-world fiction (who here has seen the last season of LEXX? where a real estate agent from Florida is voted Pope and unknown vietnam POW is elected president....and scientists fired up Hadron Collider will will cause the Earth to implode upon itself. weird, ya?)

in this day and age, where if someone doesn't agree with your political views, it's blamed on the "liberal" or "leftist" media. I'm starting to think that's not exactly the case. yes, there is some bias, but sometimes, just sometimes, a reporter actually is candid.

Dave Letterman hasn't been pro Obama as far as I can tell, but check out this clip from his show last night...

can anyone please explain why folks want to elect McCain? I am asking in all sincerity. please. why?

The only argument that I can think of...in sincerity....is if the people honestly think that the current administration is doing a good job, and they don't want the gov't to change.

Unfortunately, I am related to a person that thinks that. She is also in her 80's and has been conservative for YEARS. We cant change her mind, and we stopped trying years ago. She is one of the reasons I vote with an absentee ballot....to make sure I do get counted because my only other choice is to get my butt up at 4:30AM and be #1 or 2 at the voting precinct...and I like sleeping in until at least 5:30 on work mornings.

I'm basically with Dave...for many years I've thought of McCain as the one Republican in DC I might seriously consider voting for. I've watched him over the years be a rare Republican not totally caught up in the Radical Right Evangelical cult, and less corrupted by corporate bribes than the average senator, and more pragmatic and bipartisan, and more moderate. He's generally shown more integrity and class than a lot of senators, especially Republican ones, and he's been admirably aggressive in going after corrupt government contractors.

He also got the shit kicked out of him by Bush, which you would think would speak well of him.

Unfortunately he's made some Faustian bargains in this campaign. After years of being a play-fair, honor and decency kinda guy, he went and hired the Rove crew of campaign managers and dirty-tricks experts, so his campaign's been every bit as mean, dishonest, low and often illegal as we've come to expect Bush campaigns to be. Then, perhaps out of his personal proclivity to grab attention by surprising people, he picked a vicious, ruthless nitwit as his runningmate, partly to curry favor with her fellow Creationists and Fucking Assholes (short for "people who think a rape victim should pay for her police exam").

As I blogged a few months back, this formerly honorable public servant has, like many before him, sold his soul for power, and now many of his former supporters are turning their backs on him in disappointment and disgust.

Still, if he can keep his nutcase VP locked up someplace where she continues to avoid going off-script and making a complete ass of herself, it still seems possible that he could be the second-best president of the past generation. His overall record is nowhere near as corrupt and bizarre as those of Reagan, Bush, and Bush, so who knows, maybe he might grow his balls back and his soul too. More likely he'll be offed by the Far Right and we'll get Momma Mooseolini, who combines all the worst aspects of Reagan and Dubya.

Well there's....um...uh...and...

You see, he was once the good guy. He was barely Republican really. The higher up the food chain he's gotten the more corrupt he is coming across.

Over Obama he does have experience, but then he countered that with Palin.
He voted down the bailout, but then opened his mouth and took credit for getting the Republicans to agree, when they were already in process of voting it down.

Lately he takes one step forward and two steps back. More than him I am terrified of Palin.
And as a "team" they are so dysfunctional I don't see how people can back her, except my super religious crazy sister. She reminds me of Palin (scary, right?)

So yeah...if this were about him running years ago, he would have won.
Times have changed, and so has he which leaves me with little to grasp when it comes to faith in the man to lead this country.

Two years ago he decided he was sick of the Republican party not letting him be president, so he rolled over and played dead, completely flip-flopping on his abortion stance, for example. So two years ago I would have said that he's taken the least amount of money from special interest groups, and introduced legislation to dramatically reduce the ability of a few rich people to sway the course of an election (the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law)

But on the down side, he was one of the Keating Five the last time deregulation of the finance industry caused an economic meltdown, and three of the people on his campaign staff were pretty instrumental in the current one.

Are you still in touch with Brian? He's probably pro-McCain and could explain it to you. Not explain it so YOU would vote for McCain, but explain his rationale.

The thing *I* don't understand is why people are saying that Palin did so well in the interview with Katie Couric, or that she's gonna be so awesome in the upcoming debate.
