this is the time of year I, like many people, start thinking about volunteering.

here are some Volunteer Suggestions
I know an organization called the DC Childcare Collective which allows you to volunteer when you want. It's a group that supports grassroots organizations (most of them progressive/activist types) in DC that need childcare in order to do actions, meetings etc. They often provide childcare for the meetings for Empower DC a local advocacy group on affordable housing, childcare and public property -- so parents who want to get involved can!
If this appeals -- email Jen Morely at: jenkmorley@gmail.com
You do need to do a training, but I think they have one coming up soon.

DC Central Kitchen- www.dccentralkitchen.org- Several programs and take volunteers constantly. You just sign up online and show up. I highly recommend signing up online. Its so easy.

(I'll be volunteering here - if I can get a spot).

Dear Supporter,
Looking for a holiday volunteer opportunity? Curious to see the inside of the EWG office?
Want to be a part of EWG's fight to protect human health and the environment?
Come help us prepare for our year-end fundraising drive!
WHO: You.
WHAT: Helping EWG package our 2008 holiday gift bags.
WHEN: 10 - 3pm Saturday, November 15
12 - 5pm Sunday, November 23
6 - 9pm Tuesday, December 9
Please join us for at least 2 hours on any or all days.
WHERE: EWG Headquarters
1436 U Street, NW, Suite 100
Washington, DC 20009
WHY: For the second year, EWG will be offering holiday gift bags to
supporters who donate $135 or more in our year end campaign. Given the
small size of our staff and our desire to spend as much of our funding
as possible on research and activism, we need volunteers to help stuff
gift bags and get them ready for mailing.
Volunteers who work for at least 3 hours will receive an organic cotton
tote printed with our "Dirty Dozen" list!
RSVP: Amy Rosenthal, amy@ewg.org or 202.667.6982

BTW... thanks for posting this! I tried to volunteer at DC Central kitchen around Thanksgiving, but they had enough volunteers and didn't need more, but I scheduled time for this week, and did four hours yesterday and will do more on Friday and New Year's day. :)
