This VLA program, Legal and Business Issues for Dancers and Dance Organizations, will cover the legal and business issues that affect individual dancers as well as dance organizations, studios, and institutions. The legal and business issues covered in this course will focus on intellectual property issues (copyrights, trademarks), as well as legal entities (LLCs, nonprofit corporations, parterships). There will also be an introduction to the fiscal sponsorship structure. This program is for professionals within organizations, individual dancers, and dance students at all stages of profesional development.

I. Intellectual Property
If you are a dancer, choreographer, or dance organization and create, perform or work with music, film, theatre, literary material, visual artworks, the internet, or graphic design, you are dealing with intellectual property assets. So, it's key for you to understand the law that governs these assets. This segment will cover the general standards for copyright protection; moral rights; registration; ownership and authorship; infringement and remedies; works for hire; fair use; licensing; and protection duration.
II. Your Arts Business
Your artistic and creative activities may be exposing you to liability.
Threshold issues for dancers, choreographers, and dance organizations include deciding if, and when, to set up a formal legal entity for your activities, and deciding between the for-profit and not-for-profit corporate models. This segment will also cover trademark law and the importance of policing and protecting your service and trademarks.

Don't Forget!

Artist Citizen!
November 12th from 7 – 9pm
The Source Theatre
1835 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC
Dance/MetroDC is holding the second in a series of three summits this fall to find out what’s on the minds of dance artists and their collaborators.
So “Artist Citizen!” is a chance to build on the first summit “Dancer Citizen!” held prior to the election.
Who should be there?
Dancers, theatre people, visual artists, musicians, any-and-all media artists.
Our agenda?
To get ideas about artists mentoring artists and collaborative models in process and presentation out in to the air so we can learn from our colleagues. This gathering is baldly partisan: pro-future, pro-you, pro-me, pro-artsy, sans pretense. Only requirement is to encourage your multi-media artist friends to join us. (Already we will be joined by friends from Cultural Development Corporation, resident artists at the Source Theatre, members of the Artists’ Bloc) The meeting will finish with a trek to a local beverage establishment to put ourselves proudly in the public eye, talk passionately, and have an art-in!

Please RSVP at info@dancemetrodc.org!

Host Committee for Dance/USA June 2010 Annual Conference

I'm so glad you're going to this! I've seen info about VLA through my choir work and they're great!

I have no idea what questions you should ask, but I'm sure you'll think of them as you hear their presentation and the questions other people ask.

But definately use one or two of my favorite "last question to finish the conversation" questions.
- Is there anything else you think I should know?
- What are the common problems you see people like me get into?
- What do you wish every

- What do you wish every <fill in the blank with something like artist, street performer, etc> knew or did?
- Are there other organizations or services like VLA that someone like me should look into? Maybe someone with accounting experience or marketing experience?

Good luck!
