My first attempt at home brewing was a Spiced Hard Cider. I used regular bakers Yeast and fermented it in 2 liter soda bottles that I filled only about 3/4 of the way and pushed all the air out. I had to keep opening the bottles and pushing the air out 2 to 3 times a day...Once in the morning, once when I got home from work and once before I went to bed... to avoid a blow-out. Depending on how much you want to make, I would recommend using a glass Gallon bottle, Gum Stopper and an airlock. You can find both here: http://jaysbrewing.com

I am thinking about making a batch of my "Purple Stuff" as soon as I can get my hands on some good quality local Honey. Think Manischewitz made with Honey. YUMMY stuff. If you want, you could come over and help/watch?
